The conference will feature panels, individual paper submissions, and innovative formats exploring the broader themes of gender and sexuality in music and dance. Scholars are invited to send proposals and are strongly encouraged to attend the whole event, thereby contributing to its success. This year’s broad conference theme is ‘resilience’ with a particular focus on the following themes:

1. Voicing resistance and building resilience through music and music scholarship:

Amid acute socio-political divisions, we seek to explore how music is operationalised by musicians, scholars, and social actors as a tool of non-compliance. We welcome submissions that examine how music is used to challenge dominant narratives through frameworks that focus on gender and sexuality. We also invite presentations that inquire how music and dance enable individuals to negotiate or resist gender or sexuality-based oppression.

2. Musical responses to right-wing populism

Political developments across the world have demonstrated the rise of right-wing populism in recent years. These populist discourses in some cases promote regressive propositions on questions concerning genders and sexualities. However, in other cases, policies of gender and sexuality are used to consolidate racist claims of western superiority over “others". We invite submissions which analyze how musical expressions respond to such politics.

3. Critical questioning of intersectionality and/or interdependency:

In the past years, concepts of intersectionality and interdependency have increasingly been used to explore issues on music and gender, and music and sexuality. While these concepts succeed to show how gender and sexuality are interwoven with many other categories in musical practice and cannot be studied in singularity, they have also been criticized, for example for again essentialising the involved categories. We seek submissions that show and critically question how intersectionality and interdependency can be used meaningfully in music research on gender and sexuality and what alternative theoretical concepts are at stake.

4. New research:
Submissions that address any other new research pertaining to music, gender and sexuality are also welcome. We especially encourage work on emerging debates on issues such as disability, HIV-AIDS, sexual abuse, #MeToo movement, trans-exclusionary radical feminism (TERF), sex work and related research.

Proposals are invited for:

  • Individual or co-authored papers (20 minutes) – Title and abstracts of up to 300 words
  • Themed panel sessions of three individual (20 minute) papers – Title and abstracts of up to 300 words per paper plus panel title, and up to 300 words outlining the general motivation/theme for the panel
  • Seventy-five minute sessions in innovative formats – up to 1000 words outlining the form and content of the sessions.
